New Author FAQ
I want to write a book. Where do I start?
Everyone has a story to tell, and many people want to turn their story into a book. However, few people have the discipline to finish a first draft. If you want to write a book, you need to write every day. It’s really that simple. Even twenty minutes per day will produce a novel worth of content in just a few months. It doesn’t matter if you think you’re a good writer, the important thing is that you’re building the habit. Until you’ve got something down on paper, there’s not a lot we can do to help.
How do I know if my writing is any good?
The most important thing you can do is get feedback. Most cities have several writing clubs (check meetup.com, that’s where I found my first writing club), and if your town doesn’t have a club, you could always start one. I’ve found these clubs, where people exchange writing samples, much more effective at providing feedback than having a friend read your work, and strangers tend to offer more constructive criticism.
If you would like to have us conduct an analysis of your writing style, select “Writing Sample Analysis” from our products page.
Should I self-publish or find a commercial publisher to publish my book?
This is a popular question among new authors, and IMHO, there is a simple answer. You need to establish yourself as a successful author before approaching a publisher with a manuscript. Commercial publishers are extremely risk adverse, and generally unwilling in invest thousands of production dollars on an unknown author. One exception to this is if you have a massive (and measurable) following (as in over 100,000 fans on social media).
If you’re looking for direction on where to publish, we can help, select “Personal Publishing Plan” from our product page.
I’ve decided to self-publish. Where do I start?
This largely depends on what type of book you are writing, and what stage of the publishing process you are in. It also depends on your budget. After you have written your book, you will need to find an editor, proofreader, cover artist, etc.
If you need a strategy to acquire these publishing resources, we can help. Select, “Book Development Consulting” from our product page.
Will you provide in depth feedback on my entire manuscript?
We can!* Having an expert consultant assist with your publishing project will make an enormous difference in the quality of your final product. We are NOT editors, but we know how to properly structure your document, and tailor your unique style to your intended audience. If you would like us to provide line-by-line feedback on your manuscript, select “Full In Depth Review” from our product page.
*Due to time constraints (we are all full time authors here at Stellar Publishing), we are currently unable to thoroughly review manuscripts greater than 15,000 words.
